Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
