Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
